How To Draw A Realistic Eye With A Mechanical Pencil

Dear Creative person,

The eye is a very special part of us. It makes us unique considering you will never find the same middle another time in the world. It's no surprise that every artist wants to know, how to describe a realistic eye. Especially for beginners, that tin can be very challenging. That'south why I created this tutorial. I desire to evidence yous, how to draw a realistic eye, step by pace.

How to draw an eye – Timelapse video

Before nosotros start I will prove you what you volition learn in this tutorial.

A video says more than a thousand words, that'southward why I created a video, in which you tin see the cosmos process of the heart in a time-lapse drawing video. I hope you savour it.

In the adjacent paragraphs I volition explain you step by step How I created this realistic centre drawing.

If you lot are a beginner or y'all want to larn all the important nuts before you become on with my tutorial. I recommend you lot to showtime with the drawing lesson most hatching.

I will show y'all, How I to draw a realistic eye.

Here yous can meet the portrait, that I am working on at the moment. I recorded almost every infinitesimal of the creation process. In the post-obit paragraphs, you will see how you can describe a realistic eye, step by step.

Realistic Eye Drawing

Starting with the fine lines – Charcoal B

At the beginning, you have to beginning with the so-called "outlines". Sometimes they are very difficult to draw considering in that location are only a few "existent lines" in the drawing. The most of the times you volition only find something like adumbral areas. Because of that, you lot shouldn't describe very hard lines but soft lines and soft hatching, which shows the vague proportions of the eye.

In the following pic, you can encounter the very soft lines on the paper (I know you almost don't see them :D). Mayhap you desire to know how yous get the right proportions. There are different techniques and I will explain them soon in another tutorial. Today I desire to focus on the step by step creation of a realistic eye.

OutlinesDrawing

First, describe the darkest parts!

When I started cartoon I thought that you have to start with the brightest parts and do the dark parts at the finish. Now I practice exactly the reverse. I first with the darkest parts to put an "anchor".

Similar this, I find the right shading tones much improve, because I encounter what the darkest part is and what the brightest office is (newspaper). In the following pictures yous can meet, stride by stride, how I start.

At first, I use the Pierre Noire 3B Pencil from Conté a Paris. I southwardtart very softly with the first layer. Cartoon that soft with a very dark pencil is pretty hard and you accept to practice a lot!

Conte Pierre Noire Pencil 3B

The First Layer

With the first layer, I start at the darkest parts of the educatee. I too use the first layer to build the course of the student. Here you can run across that the first outlines don't take to be 100% exact considering you built the perfect form step by footstep with hatching.

If you don't know what hatching is, and how you practise it correctly, you should definitely read my tutorial about hatching: Realistic Pencil Cartoon Techniques – Hatching

After the first layer I still go on with the Pierre Noire 3B, only this fourth dimension I showtime to go darker and darker. At the upper part of the pupil, y'all can see how it gets darker.

Slowly I also commencement with some other parts of the eye. I recall one of the hardest parts when you draw an eye is, to become the forms right. A very little difference of the eye form can cause a completely different expression. So please take your time to get the form equally good as you can.

Create some softer parts with charcoal

After creating the dark parts yous tin slowly start to draw some brighter areas and some transitions. In this tutorial, I separate the dissimilar pencils in unlike steps. That doesn't mean that yous should e'er stay with simply one pencil. You always take to go back to correct different parts or to mix layers.

A good habit is to accept all your pencils in ane manus to pick them with the other. In the following pictures, you can run across how the parts in the centre of the heart kickoff to become a bit darker.

Make corrections with the eraser

At any time of the drawing, you should brand corrections with the eraser to get the forms and the shadows as good as possible. Please don't underestimate the use of the eraser. I employ the eraser very often and it is one of the most important tools for an artist. In the post-obit picture, you can run across how I use a kneaded eraser and a pencil eraser.

Using the eraser in the right way is another topic that I will explain in ane of the coming tutorials.

I can recommend the post-obit erasers for your drawings:

BM2 Mechanical Pencil Eraser

Faber-Castell Erasers – Drawing Art kneaded Erasers, Big size Greyness – 4 Pack

Ohuhu Electric Eraser Kit

Create the eyeball with graphite pencils

Ane thing I tell all beginners, that want to know how to draw a realistic eye is, that an eyeball is not completely white. The whitest spot is commonly where the eye reflects the light. The other parts of the eyeball can be really dark!

For the darkest parts of the eyeball, you tin can use charcoal pencils or sometimes even the Pierre Noire pencil. For the brighter parts, you can apply different graphite pencils. I usually utilise the threeH, HB and F pencil to do that.

Start with the darkest parts and go along layer by layer with brighter pencils.

For the brightest parts, you should employ the 3H or the white paper color.

In the following pic, you can see the slight shadows that make the eyeball look circular.

Cartoon the peel around the centre

The eyeball is finished for now. Later I will add some more than details to get closer and closer to the result that I desire. Before that, I depict the surrounding skin. When the peel is vivid, I unremarkably get-go with the HB Charcoal pencil. Sometimes I also start with darker ones, when the skin is very night in some places.

For beginners, information technology is always easier to start with a bit brighter pencils, considering you can get darker step by pace. As a pro, y'all can outset direct with the darkest pencils for the darkest parts. If you desire to describe realistic pare, you lot have to know how to hatch. Again I want to direct you lot to my hatching tutorial:

Pencil drawing tutorial – Hatching

Later creating a vague grade with the HB Charcoal pencil, I go on with the B Charcoal pencil to create some more than depth. With the B Charcoal pencil, I likewise beginning to describe the grade of the face.

Yous accept to be very careful when you lot draw the proportions. Draw the darker parts step past step very slowly. When you realize that you drew something wrong, correct information technology with the kneaded eraser.

Describe the dark lines and correct them with the eraser

In my stance, 1 of the hardest parts is to draw the nighttime lines around the eye. If they are not 100% correct, the expression on the confront will be completely wrong.

So built them slowly layer past layer with the 3B Charcoal pencil. Utilize a very abrupt eraser tip to correct the form until it is like you lot desire information technology. This tin can take a few turns simply information technology is worth to practise the correction.

If y'all accept bug to get a sharp pencil tip y'all should check my, How to sharpen pencils tutorial

Fine details

Now it is fourth dimension to depict the very fine details on the skin. You won't see everything in a photo, that why you should become to a museum to watch the art in real life. Simply there you lot can see all the details that the artist drew. To create some slight details you tin use the 3H, HB or F graphite pencils.

Similar always every situation is dissimilar and sometimes you lot also have to apply darker pencils. In art, there is no exact fashion, considering every flick is very different.

Stop strong!

At the end of a part, you have to do a lot of correction loops to bring information technology to excellence! But like this, you will larn how to draw a realistic eye. Utilise all your pencils and dissimilar erasers to go closer and closer to the end result.

Go away from your drawing for some time, look once again and correct errors that yous see. Expect from far and from close and correct once more. Like this, you have to go on until y'all are happy with your cartoon. I know an artist will never say that it's perfect, but at that place has to be a signal to stop :D.

Your turn!

At present it's your turn! I promise my tutorial will help you lot to draw a realistic eye. Never give up! Sometimes it looks shitty at the beginning and after very adept :). But go on and on and practice correction until you volition be where yous desire to be.

Feel gratuitous to join CREATIVE LIVE it is a very nice page with a lot of clases about every kind of creativity.

All the Best
